OVERVIEW
Racism has been viewed as a problem of prejudice and bigotry. Despite the gains won over the past 50 years, our society has not dealt with the racist systems of power that exist within our culture and society. We have not dealt with the unearned privileges of being white and the disadvantages of being a person of color in the U S today which people of color do not enjoy. Call To Action sees this project as an opportunity to significantly affect the lives of Call To Action members, their chapters and their communities for justice in Church and society.
Call to Action has prioritized Anti-Racism work as essential to social justice. To help make that happen, we need people to come and share their experiences of racism, and suggest what steps are necessary to create a just world for ALL.Video, discussion, role-playing, caucuses, naming and framing exercises, are some of the ways that racism and privilege will be examined during this workshop. Let’s examine possible next steps in the quest for racial justice in Dane County.
LOCATION
Urban League - 2222 South Park Street #200 Madison, WI
FACILITATORS
Our facilitators come from the Anti-Racism Team of Call to Action National. They work as a team, one person of color and one white person. Anti-Racism Team members have facilitated trainings in several cities and CTA Chapters, including Rochester, NY, St. Louis, MO, Cincinnati, OH and McAllen, TX.
Myra Brown is a minister at Spritus Christi Church in Rochester, NY. She is an anti- racism educator and activist, working nationally and locally in Rochester. Myra leads SPARC, the local anti-racism group, and was very involved in local issues including opposing mayoral control of city schools in Rochester. Myra is an engaging speaker who has an uncanny ability to engage both white people and people of color in the hard work of promoting racial justice.
Marian Fredal has been active as a White anti-racist activist for 15 years. She has been active with United to End Racism since 2001, and was part of the United to End Racism team at the White Privilege Conference in 2010. She leads support groups for whites, and has researched anti-racism work in the Catholic Church.
